November 27, 2013

With origins dating as far back as 1999, No Shave November is an event to raise cancer awareness, usually for prostate or testicular cancer, but also for men’s health in general.

No-Shave November is not just one group but actually a loosely knit number of different groups and organizations all devoted to raising cancer awareness by putting a fun twist on the month of November.

The basic premise of No-Shave November is to keep the fight against cancer top of mind, making it easier for people to do their part, whether it be donating, volunteering or just helping to spread the word.  The different organizations and groups each have their own guidelines but all of them are united by putting down their razors during the month of November.  And its not just men growing beards (or members of the Boston Red Sox), women can join the cause too (just wear long pants or long sleeved blouses for the month, ladies!)  The important thing is to have fun with it and get creative!  You can participate on any level; you can go it alone or form a group and make it a party.  You can even have fun contests for best beard, longest beard, scruffiest beard—the list is endless!  The point is there are no rules other than supporting the cause.

And if you choose to donate there are a number of non profits and organizations that can direct your funds to help the cause including the American Cancer Society and Fight Colorectal Cancer, but again the choice is yours—you can also work with another charity you are familiar with.

Here is a list of just a few of the groups who are throwing away their razors in November in the fight against cancer:  Since 2004, the Movember Foundation has run Movember events specializing in moustaches to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer in Australia and New Zealand.  In recent years the organization has spread worldwide including the U.S.  There are also a number of easy to like Facebook pages as well, just search for NoShaveNovember.

As for me, here I am on Day 26 without razor—pretty scruffy, huh?!

NoShaveNovember Day 26

By the way, for you history buffs the actual title, No Shave November, was dubbed by the socialist Karl Marx in a celebration of communism. Marx championed beard-growing during this month as a way to upset the bourgeoisie.  The idea was concocted in order to agitate the capitalist factory owners of the time.  Marx’s plan never came to fruition and No Shave November faded away into the history books—until now!
